MARLBOROUGH CITY HAPPENINGS! - May 2016
Boston Globe Magazine has named the City of Marlborough among its 2016 Game Changers. Marlborough is the only community on the list of 46 “innovators" who "had the vision, leadership, and determination to make a difference.”
Continuing the burgeoning growth of the life sciences industry in the city and state, LFB USA broke ground on a new 65,000-square-foot manufacturing and laboratory facility that will bring 50 new jobs to Marlborough.
Plans for a sprawling commercial development on Rte. 20 took a step forward, as the Urban Affairs Committee signed off on a zoning overlay district for the 475,000-square-foot Apex Center of New England.
A recent study by the Stanford University Center for Education Policy Analysis, published by the New York Times, showed that students in Marlborough performed at a level 1.3 grade levels higher than the national average.
The Marlborough Downtown Village Association (MDVA) took a giant step forward, changing its status from a thriving grassroots organization to a well-defined nonprofit. MDVA also elected officers and a board of directors.
Mayor Arthur Vigeant asked the City Council to approve a transfer to fully fund the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation for FY2017, including $75,000 to finance the Walker Building feasibility study.
The biopharma industry in Central Mass. is hiring at a record rate, with job listings more than doubling in Q1 2016, according to MassBioEd Foundation. Marlborough's Quest Diagnostics had the 2nd highest number of job listings.
First ReWalk Robotics sought to help paraplegics walk again with its exoskeleton. Now the company is partnering with Harvard's Wyss Institute to develop a softer, lighter, more versatile "exosuit" for stroke and MS patients.
A device from Marlborough's ReWalk Robotics received comprehensive coverage through the first such policy from a commercial insurer. The insurer also issued its first reimbursement for a ReWalk exoskeleton.
A system from Marlborough-based Boston Scientific, which can be used in the place of opioids to combat chronic pain by masking pain signals from reaching the brain, has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Marlborough's Boston Scientific (BSX) has received FDA approval for two catheters that can be used with to generate a 3D map of a patient's heart to help diagnose, locate and treat the source of rhythm abnormality.
Marlborough-based Sunovion Pharmaceuticals announced a drug used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar depression was well-tolerated in patients and improved depressive symptoms in a secondary analysis.
A post-hoc analysis of a long-term safety study of the effectiveness of Sunovion Pharmaceuticals' Brovana found the drug to be effective in reducing hospitalization in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
According to a Spring 2016 hospital safety ranking, Marlborough Hospital has received its third consecutive A grade in terms of patient safety. The hospital has received an A grade in each session since the Spring of 2015.
Marlborough-based global diagnostics company Oxford Immunotec saw a 24 percent year over year jump in revenue for the first quarter of 2016. On a constant currency basis, revenue growth was 23 percent versus the prior year.
Avidia Bank has launched a commercial-lending web portal to offer a quick and convenient way to access loans online. The new portal streamlines the approval process allowing businesses to get commercial loans quicker.
The Urban Affairs Committee signed off on a local barbeque restaurant owner’s plans to expand his outdoor patio in order to add live music, TVs, fire pits, covered seating, a small bar, kitchen and recreation area with games.
